The Florida panther prowls in the southwestern part of the Sunshine State near Big Cypress National Preserve. These big cats are considered endangered with less than 100 panthers left in in the wild. Florida panthers are ravenous carnivores, and their prey are no match for their powerful jaws. These solitary and nocturnal felines are in desperate need of protection against habitat loss and residential development. The panther was designated as the official mammal for the state of Florida in 1982.
